The face-off between the Government of Plateau State and striking Local Government workers took another dimension yesterday as the Governor issued an ultimatum for resumption.
The government had threatened that the workers must resume on Monday November 9, 2012 or face the consequence.
Speaking with journalists in the state capital of Jos, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Mr Paul Wai, said “the refusal of the workers to call off the six month strike has made it necessary for government to take appropriate steps to salvage the Local Government system and primary education in the state from total collapse.”
“The government on compassionate grounds has decided to pay all resuming workers October salary which they do not deserve.”
The commissioner added that the Biometric Capture and Staff screening of local councils will commence soon.
The workers had in January demanded full implementation of the N18,000 Minimum Wage. The state government however said it was unable to pay due to the poor Federal Revenue Allocation accrued to them. But after series of negotiations, both parties settled on 50% of the wage pending when the allocation improves.
