Plateau crisis: Military Taskforce establishes strike force units in flashpoints communities

The Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) saddled with the responsibility of maintaining peace in Plateau State said it has set up strike force units in some selected communities in the State to improve its response to distress calls.

Commander of OPSH, Major General Tagbo Ude made the disclosure yesterday, in Gashish, a flash point community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, while touring the area.

Ude said despite the Forward Operation base and the Sector 7 base deployed in the area, it became necessary to have the strike force base, considering the difficult terrain around Gashish.

The commander of the special task force said he opened a forum for both herdsman and farmers to dialogue frequently, which is already yielding positive results.

“When I took over as the OPSH Commander last year, I visited Kurra Falls and saw that all the villagers are nowhere to be found. So, I decided to set up a ‘Strike Force Base’ that will provide security within the area to boost the confidence of the villagers, so that they can return home and with this development, the inhabitants of this community are now returning home. This Base is to guarantee the safety of the villagers at all times”, he assured.

He said he was happy that since the establishment of the Strike Force Base, lives and property had been secured, which had led to the return of peace to the area.

He stressed that “no life has been reported to be lost and school children have also returned to school”.

Ude urged the Community leaders and all inhabitants of Barkin-Ladi LGA to be law abiding and to also learn to tolerate each other.

Responding, the Management Committee Chairman of Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area, Mr. Bitrus Doro, said he was full of gratitude to the OPSH Commander, for his tireless effort to ensure that the ‘Base’, which had brought peace back to the community was established.

He also thanked the Commander for creating a Military/Civilian relationship, a feat which he also said had promoted peace in the community.

The LG boss said government will continue to do its best to ensure sustainable support for OPSH, while calling on the public to partner with the OPSH to further promote sustainable co-existence.
