Community Action for Popular Participation,CAPP, a non-governmental organisation, has called on Local Government Councils in Plateau
State to create a Department or unit for peace building.
This call was made by CAPP’s Project Manager, Mr. Nelson Ananze, yesterday while on an advocacy visit in Jos South and Jos North Local Government Councils, in line with the persistent civil unrest that has taken over the State.
According to him, “Peace building is an arduous and continuous process. We call on Local Governments, especially those affected by the civil unrest in the state to invest in it by creating an Office, Department or Unit for peace building.
“This will enhance security within the local government as it would provide early warning mechanisms caopable of forestalling violence in the communities.
“The office would engage in mediation and peace activities in communities which would enhance trust and build confidence amongst the people.
He stressed that, “The office will also serve as a disaster management unit that will provide relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction and reconciliation in times of conflict”.
In his response, the Committee Chairman of the Council, Mr. Peter Dung, said the council would look into their request, since peace was paramount in every community.
He added that, “Without peace, there won’t be any meaningful development, and we thank God that peace is gradually returning to the state.
