Plateau Assembly may grant PLASIEC autonomy – Deputy Speaker

The Deputy Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Yusuf Gagdi, said the State Assembly plans to cancel the law establishing the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLAISEC), in the first quarter of 2017.

Gagdi disclosed this in a chat with journalists in Jos.

He said the bill to cancel the local government law was presented to the House before the break.

The Deputy Speaker maintained that the House would focus on harmonizing the two existing local government laws which were responsible for the extension of the tenure of the local governments at the request of Governor Simon Lalong, to give the House enough time to amend the laws.

He added that the House intended to look into the law and cancel it, so as to give the commission the same powers that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has because of the vague nature of the law establishing PLASIEC.

“We want PLASIEC to have absolute control of local government (LG) elections,” he added.

It would be recalled that in July, 2015, Governor Lalong removed the elected local government Chairmen and councilors and replaced them with Management Committee Chairmen, pending when another local government election is conducted.
