A small chartered passenger plane, belonging to the associated airline, and carrying about 27 people including the body of the late governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Agagu has shortly after its takeoff crashed at the local wing of the Lagos airport on Thursday morning, leaving at least 5 people dead, Aviation authorities have confirmed.
Spokesman to the Aviation Ministry, Joe Obi said some passengers in the plane survived the crashed, which was flying from Lagos to Akure, with seven crew and 20 passengers, bringing the total of people on board to 27.
Obi, while speaking on the crash said, “The plane couldn’t lift properly so it just came down. Some persons are being rushed to the hospital. A few dead bodies have been recovered, but there are survivors.”
Yakubu Dati, coordinating general manager of Nigeria’s airports authority, had disclosed that no fewer than five persons were killed in the crash.
“There’s a lot of smoke coming from the runway. There are fire-fighters rushing to the scene,” Rasaki Rhakod, who runs a car service around the airport, reportedly told Reuters.
However, another version of the report says the first son of the late Agagu as well as the son of the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo were all involved in the crash. DailyPost cannot confirm at the moment whether they survived the crash.
Meanwhile, our correspondent at the scene has reported that five more corpses are still in the plane, and efforts are underway to ensure they are evacuated. He said Agagus Son reportedly survived the crash, though it’s yet confirmed. However, Agagu’s corpse has just been evacuated, but there is an ongoing conflict between the Nigeria Police and the FRSC over where the corpse should be conveyed to.
