A petrol tanker on Tuesday exploded at Abakaliki/Enugu Express Way, destroying Ebonyi State government street lights and other properties worth millions of naira.
The tanker was said to have veered off from the road while coming from Enugu axis and suddenly climbed the pavement between the highway and fell.
It was gathered that the driver and the conductor of the vehicle were safe as they jumped out before the tanker cut fire.
An eyewitness, a member of the Vigilante group, located within the area of the incident, told newsmen that: “two motorcycle operators were driving closely to the tanker, but were fortunate not to be caught by the fire, while the driver and the conductor immediately escaped.
“We tried calling the fire service people, but it took time for them to come. We thank God that there was no vehicle coming behind the fuel tanker.”
As of the time of filling this report, men from the Nigerian Fire Service were seen battling to quench the fire.
