The National Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), Amb. Dickson Akoh, has lauded Senator Bukola Saraki-led Senate for resisting attempt by some interested parties to allegedly stall a bill meant for recognizing the body as a federal security agency.
Akoh, who was speaking during a visit to PCN, Ekiti Command, yesterday, Akoh said the jobs of the private security outfit was well defined in the bill presented before the senate and assured that their duties won’t overlap with the statutory duties of the police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Akoh, who praised the senate for rising above partisanship in dealing with the bill, which had passed second reading, promised to work harmoniously with other security agencies to make the country free from insurgency and criminality.
The National Commandant, represented by a national officer, Mr Lukman Yekeen, said part of PCN’s duties, if finally recognized as a statutory security agency, would be to partner with school managements, at both secondary and tertiary levels, to rid them of cultism and examination malpractices.
He stated that he had been recruiting well disciplined officers across the 36 states of the federation, saying “my officers and men won’t flex muscles or engage in unwarranted competition with other security outfits.
“What we are out to achieve is the security of this country. Every patriotic Nigerian should know that the killings and bombing as well as the increasing crime rates in our nation call for sober reflection and need every concerted effort to redeem our collective integrity.
“Aside this, most of those that would be employed will be graduate youths. This will help in putting their minds off any act of criminality and reduce unemployment palaver in our nation.
“We should all support action being taken to reinforce the security of this nation. We have been operating in Nigeria since 1993 and we never had issues with any security agency and we will surely keep the tempo if we scale the hurdle at the Senate.
“Based on what we presented before the Senate, our mandate won’t go beyond certain level and the fear that there could be unhealthy competition with other security agencies is out of place.
“This is neither a political or ethnic group, we are just group of patriotic Nigerians who want to help the federal government to get things right in the area of security and this we tend to achieve with the support of every Nigerian”, he said.
