Following the outcome of last Saturday’s nationwide ward congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senators on the platform of the party have threatened to shut down the government of President Goodluck Jonathan.
The lawmakers accused him of allowing the governors to take over the state structures.
The Senators also hinted that they would support their colleagues in the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, to impeach President Jonathan if it became necessary.
Demonstrating their grouse, the lawmakers yesterday boycotted legislative activities by adjourning sitting without considering a single item on the Order Paper.
At a closed-door meeting held by the PDP senators’ caucus at the new wing of the Senate Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, the senators also agreed not to consider further executive bills and businesses, including the 2015 budget proposal.
Speaking on their behalf, one of them said they will continue to boycott legislative duties.
“That is what we will continue to do. President Goodluck Jonathan has lost the Senate.
“Snce he has left the PDP structures in the hands of the governors, let the governors also come and do our job. We are going to shut the government.
“What is it that the President asked that we’ve not given to him? We are going to show solidarity with the Speaker of House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal.
“We will not sit again. There will be no consideration of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, and there will be no budget. We may also begin his impeachment.
“When we invoked the doctrine of necessity, we even proceeded to give him full option. We did the same thing on the state of emergency. But now, he has lost the Senate.
“By the time the House of Representatives resumes on December 3, most of PDP members in the House would have lost their return bids and they will quickly move to APC and populate the party.”
Senate President David Mark could not preside at plenary because of his attendance at the Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa.
The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, presided.
But as the senators had adopted the votes and proceedings for October 28, Ekweremadu read a letter addressed to Mark by the President, imploring the Senate to confirm one Okwu Joseph Nnanna as a Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, who also lost out during the Cross River State congress, moved the motion that all items on the Order Paper be stood down and sitting adjourned till today to enable them attend a caucus meeting of PDP senators.
