If reports reaching us from the national headquarters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are anything to go by, then, the national chairman, Bamanga Tukur, may be on his way out of office.
This is not unconnected with the wranglings that have taken over the party, particularly his rift with majority of the Governors under the platform.
Another major factor is the cold war between Tukur and the Board of Trustees Chairman, Tony Anenih.
Sources say, Tukur is furious that Anenih left his functions and has been carrying out his, few days into his recent election as the BoT Chairman.
Also, the embattled chairman among other issues, has a long running battle with his state Governor, Murtala Nyako over leadership of the Adamawa State chapter of the party.
While the Umar Kugama faction is loyal to the Governor, the Joel Madaki faction enjoys the backing of Tukur.
Nyako’s colleagues have since shown strong solidarity to him. In their thinking, failure to do so would mean that any member of the influential NWC may decide to impose an exco on his or her home state and get away with it.
Meanwhile, Olisa Metuh, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP in a statement yesterday denied allegations that the party’s Board of Trustees Chair, Tony Anenih, has taken over the duties of the National Working Committee.
According to him, “His (Anenih) reconciliatory visits complement the reconciliation and consolidation tours embarked by the NWC and they have been yielding desired results.
“The NWC is solidly behind the activities of the BoT towards uniting the party which is central and cardinal for the party ahead of 2015.
He said that Anenih, as one of the founding fathers of the great party, has always been in the political mainstream and commands the respect of all PDP leaders and elders, adding that he has proven to be highly effective in handling party issues.
Metuh said “Nothing has been more beneficial to the PDP than the election of Anenih as the BoT Chairman, and the NWC is committed to giving him all the supports he needs to achieve his mandate. The Board of Trustees is made up of men and women of high integrity who are the conscience of the Party. Most of them are experienced Statesmen and women who played key roles in the formation of the Party. The Party therefore stands to benefit a great deal from their wise counsel at this critical moment.
“We urge our members to completely disregard these amorphous groups and continue to work together as a family, in line with the visions of the founding fathers of our great party.
