Pastor Adeboye reveals new law will also see Oyedepo, Kumuyi, others retire

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye has claimed that a new law, could see other General Overseers like Bishop Mike Okonkwo, Bishop David Oyedepo, Pastor William F. Kumuyi, etc retiring from heading their churches.

On Saturday, Adeboye announced he was stepping down as the overseer of the church in Nigeria, but will continue to head the ministry worldwide.

Pastor Joshua Obayemi has been appointed as the new head of the church in Nigeria.

Adeboye, while addressing several senior pastors and his congregation on Saturday morning, reportedly said: “Part of government interest in Churches is that they have made a law that says General Overseers and Superintendents must not stay in office beyond a certain number of years. In obedience to that law, I am stepping down as the General Overseer!”.

“By the provisions of the law, I am not the only one affected. Fellow Pastors like Bishop Oyedepo, Pastor Kumuyi, Bishop Mike Okonkwo and others will also have to go.”

Adeboye took over the leadership of RCCG in 1981 after Papa Akindayomi died the previous year. He joined the church in 1973.

In a statement released by his youngest son and personal assistant, Leke Adeboye, he said: “the latest development is sequel to the new legal requirements set up by the Financial Regulations Council, guiding all registered churches, mosques, and CSOs.

“The regulation stipulates that heads of non-profit organisations like churches now have a maximum period of 20 years to lead their organizations while in retirement, they are not permitted to hand over to their families.”
