Passengers may have to pay for overhead luggage compartments on planes

United Airlines have announced that passengers will now be charged, for the use of overhead luggage compartments on their flights.

The American airline stated this, while revealing a new pricing scheme called “Basic Economy”. It will see passengers pay extra, if they want to bring a larger carry-on bag on board.

Basic Economy travellers will however not be allocated seats until the day of their travel, which means families or large groups may most likely not get to sit together.

“The overhead bin is one of the last sacred conveniences of air travel,” New York Senator, Charles E. Schumer wrote on his website.

“The fact that United Airlines—and potentially others—plan to take that convenience away unless you pay up is really troubling.”
