Hundreds of students of Oyo State origin, under the platform of Federation of Oyo State Students Union (FOSSU), on Monday took to the streets of Ibadan, the state capital, to protest against the none payment of their bursary by the Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led administration.
The angry students added that they were also protesting against hike in school fees and persistent strike by lecturers in the state-owned institutions.
The students’ body also premised the reason for the protest on the over-crowding of students in lecture rooms, illegal levies on students just to raise revenue for the government, under-funding of all state-owned institutions, including semi-privatization of state-owned institutions, lack of effective teaching materials/aids in government schools, lack of conducive schools infrastructures.
FOSSU National President, Azeez Sharafudeen, in a statement obtained by DAILY POST, on Monday, said, “Against the bad educational policies in Oyo state, undemocratically hike in tuition fees, continuous strike in all state owned institutions, over-crowding of students in lecture rooms, illegal levies on students just to raise IGR for government, under-funding of all state owned institutions.
“It’s well known about the semi-privatization of state owned institutions, lack of effective teaching materials/aids in government schools, lack of conducive schools infrastructures and failure to pay students bursary over years after which students were been compelled and dubiously asked to pay online for the bursary form by Oyo state government years back.
“With all this aforementioned hullabaloos in the educational system of Oyo state, after vigorous consultation and failure of the state government to implement the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with the leadership of FOSSU during a round table discussion to solve crisis affecting Oyo state educational system.
“The entire students of Oyo state have met and agreed to speak out to the world the state of Oyo state education and the fall of Awolowo legacy on education in our dear state, the student populace have decided to engage the state government, in which we are powerfully ready for peaceful demonstration and to shutdown the government secretariat (Agodi), including the state governor’s office for which our plight can be heard and feel the pains we students of the state feels.
“We hereby declare Monday 29th October, 2018 as a day to engage the state government for Better Oyo Education.
“Say No to hike in tuition fees, Say no to underfunding of education from primary school to higher institution, Pay Oyo state students bursary and give scholarship, Pay outstanding salaries of our lecturers/parents, Reopen our higher institutions, Our Rights, the little we demand.”
