The Oyo State House of Assembly on Thursday resolved to invite the chairman, secretary and other members of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC).

This followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Mr Kehinde Subar and seconded by Mr Afeez Oyatokun (Afijio/APC).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the motion was titled: ‘‘The Need for Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission to Kick-start the Process for the Conduct of Local Government Elections in the state’’.

Oyatokun described the electoral body’s silence on the planned election as“ disturbing”.

He said this development caused the house to invite the body to intimate the lawmakers about the programme of action for the conduct of the elections.

In her contribution, Ms Bimbo Oladeji (LP-Ogbomoso North) said the motion came at a time the residents of the state were agitating for local government elections.

She said that the Ajimobi administration must fulfil its electioneering promise of conducting local government elections.

According to her, the local government as the third tier of government is the closest to the people at the grass roots.

The lawmakers also urged the electoral body to fulfil its mandate of consolidating grassroots democracy.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Mr Michael Adeyemo, said that the commission would also meet with the Special House Committee to brief its members on the level of preparedness and challenges responsible for the delay.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Administration of Criminal Justice bill has scaled its second reading and was passed to the House Committee on Legal Matters. (NAN)
