Former Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Oyo State, Pastor Taiwo Otegbeye, on Thursday emerged as the gubernatorial candidate of the Providence People’s Congress (PPC), ahead of the 2019 general elections in the state.
Otegbeye emerged as the candidate of the party during its gubernatorial, National Assembly and State House of Assembly primary elections held in Ibadan, the state capital.
State chairman of the party, Hon. Taiwo Oduola, who announced Otegbeye as the gubernatorial candidate of the party in the presence of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials, security agents, journalists and members of the party from the 33 local government areas in the state, added that Otegbeye having satisfied the provisions of the party’s constitution was returned unopposed as the gubernatorial candidate of the party.
The announcement of Otegbeye as the gubernatorial candidate of the party was ratified by teeming members of the party, who all affirmed that they were in support of the announcement because the former Commissioner was the only person that contested in the primary election.
Others who emerged as the party’s candidates during the primary elections included: Mr. Gbolagade Aderounmu, Pastor Akinlade Olubukola and Mrs. Oladokun Adeboyin, who were announced as Senatorial candidates of the party for Oyo Central, Oyo South and Oyo North districts respectively.
Those who emerged as the party’s candidates for the House of Representatives during the primary elections included: Ibrahim Adegoke (Oyo East/ Oyo West/ Afijio/Atiba) Akorede Mutiu (Akinyeke/Lagelu), Kabir Adewale (Egbeda/ Ona Ara), Okesola Tosin (Ibarapa North/ Ibarapa Central) and Olayiwola Samuel (Ido/Ibarapa East).
Others were: Shittu Abdullahi (Saki East/Saki West/Atisbo), Daniel Olabode (Irepo/Olorunsogo/Oorelope), Gbade Alabi (Ogbomoso North/ Ogbomoso South/Oriire), Olusegun Kolawole (Ogo Oluwa/ Surulere), Akinsola Nurudeen (Oluyole), Olootu Francis (Ibadan North East/ Ibadan South East), Adeboye Isacc (Ibadan North West/ Ibadan South West) and Raheem Taiwo (Ibadan North).
Oduola in his acceptance speech, urged the contestants to work in accordance with the aims and objectives of the party which is based on equality for all.
He said, “This is not a money-bag party, we know what money-bag politics has done to political parties in Nigeria. We have no oracle, we have no God father in PPC. If you are a Muslim or Christian, let us begin to pray to God for forgiveness. No thuggery in PPC”.
Otegbeye, who earlier served as Special Adviser on Education to Governor Abiola Ajimobi before he was subsequently appointed to head the ministry of Information and Orientation during the governor’s first term further promised that the party when elected would address the issue of poverty in the state.
He said, “Our party will address the issue of poverty in Oyo state and Nigeria. We are going to develop the agriculture value chain. We are going to promote cottage industry. It is not he function of the government to create jobs but it is the job of the government to create enabling environment for jobs creation.
“There is no reason why a child will go to bed without food in Oyo state. We will ensure that waste disposal become a source of revenue for the government, the end users and the people.”
