The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday in Abuja inaugurated six zonal screening committees for governorship aspirants of the party in the 2015 general elections.
The National Chairman of APC, Chief John Oyegun who inaugurated the committees, urged the members to be fair and transparent in carrying out their duty.
He said it was important for them to set example for other political parties and prove that APC was ready to take over government of the nation.
“Your performance must be strictly transparent because the public is watching us.
“We are the main structure or organisation in the politics today that the entire public is looking at with very critical eyes, from the point of view that the APC is the better party or agent of change that we have been waiting for.
“Will the APC meet the aspiration of Nigeria? And why are they focusing on us so intensely at this particular time? It is because of the things happening in politics.”
He also tasked them to ensure that all the documentation were prime and proper such that there would be no basis for disqualification or litigation.
“There is also the need to prepare the aspirants mind that only one of them would emerge as the party’s candidate,” he added.
The chairman, however, commended the recent actions of the party’s lawmakers when they were deprived of entering the National Assembly by the police.
He said a lot of people had been criticising the legislators for jumping over the fence but he would rather complement the indignity that they put themselves through.
“I must complement them for the vision that made them to put themselves through the indignity of climbing fences because they saw straightaway that there was something unusual about to happen.
“If they had not subjected themselves to that indignity, we might have been telling a different story today.
“We will probably be having a replica of wonderful Ekiti story where seven members can impeach a speaker.’’
He also commended them for protecting the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, adding that “in fact the nation owns them a depth of gratitude for the courage with which they confronted the riot that was instigated by the police.’’
In his remark, National Organising Secretary of the party, Mr Osita Izunaso, explained that the screening had been arranged to take place at the zonal level.
He said that the committees were expected to immediately commence work as necessary materials would be provided for them to work with on Wednesday.
Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the Chairman of the North Central Screening Committee, responding on behalf of other members, pledged that the committee would diligently carry out its responsibility.
“I am assuring that we will do a thorough job that will make the rest of Nigerians to see in us the huge difference that is between the party for change and others,’’ Oyinlola said.
Other chairmen of the committee include Sen. Chris Ngige, for North East; Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, for North West; Chief Timi Sylva, for South East; Alhaji Tijani Gwarzo, for South South, and Sen. Danjuma Goje for South West.
