Benue State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), Habu Dauda, over the weekend lamented that motorists who are given to overloading and excessive speeding are responsible for 50 per cent of road accidents.
He made this known in Makurdi, the State capital, where he noted that despite measures taken by the corps to sensitize the general public on the need to obey safety rules, some motorists mostly commercial drivers still carry over load.
Dauda stated that the Benue State Command successfully prosecuted over 200 people for various traffic offences within the last quarter of last year, noting that this was possible through the use of mobile courts, which enforced the rule on offending motorists caught across the State.
The figure covers only major routes around Makurdi alone, adding that the Command is still putting together data of other local governments of the state and the record of accidents that occurred in the outgoing year.
