Overloading: Paramount ruler urges FRSC to introduce stiffer penalties for offenders

The President of Mangu Traditional Council, Nelson Bakfur has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to introduce stiffer penalties for any driver caught overloading his vehicle, apart from the regular fine.

The paramount ruler made the call on Friday when the Unit Commander, Pankshin Unit of the Corps, Mr Nnamdi Ikeh-Akabogu visited him.

“What motorists are doing here in Mangu Local Government is appalling, especially when it comes to breaking traffic rules, regulations and the resultant colossal loss of lives.

“FRSC has to help us to deal with these offenders, who on daily basis are sending our innocent citizens to an untimely death.

“Aside fining speeding and over loading motorists, FRSC should detain them for at list a day, as part of punishment, to serve as deterrent to others,” he advised.

“I think that is the only way you could slow them down and put a stop to the carnage we see on our roads on daily basis,’’ he said.

While welcoming the newly posted unit commander, Bakfur commended the Corps for its efforts at controlling traffic and saving lives on the highways.

Earlier, Ikeh-Akabogu told the traditional ruler that he was in his palace to pay homage and introduce himself as well as to solicit his cooperation towards sensitizing his people.

Akabogu said, “There is need for us to synergise to save the lives of innocent citizens that these reckless motorists are wasting on our highways.

“We don’t want to be associated with death but with long life and safety; motorists should endeavour to check their tyres before embarking on any journey,” the unit commander stated.

He told the royal father that the unit was planning a workshop and enlightenment campaigns to educate motorists and commuters on the danger of speeding and over loading.

The Unit Commander called on the monarch to intensify efforts at educating his people on the inherent dangers of going against traffic rules and regulations.
