Over 150 thieves quit stealing in Jigawa, vow with Quran

Over 150 thieves have abandoned stealing at the Malamawa area of Kafin Hausa Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The thieves on Friday made public confessional statement and vowed with the Quran to quit the habit and declaring never-to-go-back to stealing.

Before now, the thieves were known for stealing of cars, cows, motor bikes and other items from all the nooks and crannies of the country and beyond.

They vowed to stop stealing, giving cover to thieves, buying or selling stolen property and will face God’s wrath if they failed to honor the promise.

Some of them acknowledge that they were part of those terrorizing people in the state for over some years.

Their decision followed a move by self help group who promised to deal with any body caught having hands directly or indirectly in any act of stealing by sanctioning which will have direct impact on their lives.

A decision that made thieves around the area and neighbours to make a public confession and swore to retire from the ”business.”

One of the retired thieves Dantala explained that, “I have been in stealing business for over twenty five years, but I have seen the light. I therefore promised to quit from the business”

Also another retired thief, Musa allies Gambo started that, “I have been in stealing business for over thirty five years and I used it to marry to feed my family and support my relatives and I now realized is not the right thing. I repainted.

“My main concern now is how to take good care of my families because presently I have no other means of income. I am appealing to governments to look into our condition and provide a way out so that we can stay on our feet.”

The district head of Malamawa village, Abdulrazak Hamza, explained that for over some years, thieves have been making this public confessional statement under boycott (Dangol Fulako) which means the public will boycott all daily activities with you and your entire family, including day to day activities, business, and all forms of Marital issues.

He explained that this move is exceptional and was engineered by a self help group where the thieves willingly declared themselves in public and swear with glorious Quran to quit from the business.

He said as a Muslim everybody knows the power of Holly Quran and its power and by swearing with It that signifies their repentance completely and if they failed to honor their oath, they know something definitely will happen to them.

District head of the village also appealed to state government to assist the retired thieves with something so that they can stand on their feet.

Contacting special assistant to governor Badaru on economic empowerment, Muhammad Mujaddadi, said state government does not know anything about the development.

He advised them to formally write and forward their request to authorities for consideration, assuring that state government is ready to assist them so that they can become self reliant.
