Our budget for 2016 prioritises job creation, rural transformation – Enugu govt.

The Enugu State Government says its budget for 2016 will prioritise rural transformation and employment generation. The Commissioner for Information and Culture in the state, Dr Godwin Udeuhele, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday.

Udeuhele also said that the budget would focus on developing the infrastructure in both the rural and urban areas of the state.

“The budget has been presented; the nitty-gritty is yet to be identified until the commissioner for finance does justice to it.

“But if you look at what he catalogued you observe that it is rural-based budget because majority of what is being said there (in the budget proposal) focuses on the construction of roads linking the rural areas.

“Because if you end up in the metropolis of Enugu, you will say that is the best.

“But if you are privileged to get to the hinterland, you may change your mind.

“That is why majority of what is being said in this budget is focused on rural development.

“It is from that place (rural areas) that the (agric) products of those rural areas will be reached and by so doing it will generate employment.

“Because when they produce something and there is road to evacuate it; it will give them the opportunities to produce more.’’

The commissioner told NAN that his ministry would embark on a state-wide campaign to sensitise eligible taxpayers to the need for them to pay their taxes to enable government to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people through projects implementatio.

NAN recalls that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi recently presented a 2016 budget estimate of N85.1 billion to the Enugu State House of Assembly.

The budget, christened “Budget of Stability and Consolidation’’, earmarked N43.7 billion, representing 51 per cent, as recurrent expenditure while N41.4 billion, representing 49 per cent of the total budget, was set aside for capital expenditure. NAN
