Osun: Labour leaders go underground over pressure to call off strike

Labour leaders in Osun State may have adopted a hide and seek tactics with the state government over pressures being mounted on them by the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to call off its over 6 week old strike action over months of unpaid salaries.

Sources in Osogbo, the state capital, confided in DAILY POST that the labour leaders, who met with representatives of the state government led by the chief of Staff to the Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, have refused to revert back to the government since their last meeting.

According to the source, all efforts by the government team to reach labour leaders in the state on their mobile and contacts have proved abortive, as the leaders remain adamant that a substantial part of their arrears must be settled before they can call off the strike.

The state government had summoned the labour leaders in the state following Federal Government’s recent bailout, directing them to suspend the strike since the FG had rescued the state and that in no distant time, fund would be available for salaries.

The labour leaders however have insisted that they would not call off the strike if the government did not pay part of the arrears, arguing that the little above N2 billion the government’s team said was available was insufficient to pay a month’s salaries.

When pressurized, the labour leaders promised to meet with other stakeholders for proper briefing before they can suspend the strike.

However, the government’s team has been trying to reach the labour leaders who have remained elusive until the time of filing this report.
