Osun State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Mr Emmanuel Attah has sternly warned corps members not to be tools in the hands of politicians as September 22 gubernatorial election draws near.
He advised corps members who would serve as ad-hoc staff during the poll to be patriotic and upright in their dealings and put the superior interest of the nation first.
Attah gave the charge in Osogbo, the Osun State capital on Wednesday, during an event to celebrate 45th year existence of the organisation.
He insisted that NYSC was apolitical, adding that corps members must strictly adhere to the principle and tenets of the Corps and be totally neutral.
“NYSC is a neutral body in the election process and we have over the years in different elections, given great credibility to the Nigerian election process.
“We will continue to advise our corps members that would be participating in the elections to be neutral, to defend the name of their family, their names and most importantly protect the image of NYSC.
“It is indeed sacrosanct for our corps members to sustain our good reputation and unbiased commitment to credible electoral process to deepen the confidence of electorate in us as unbiased entity.
“To politicians, they must not come near our corps members, it is indisputably a crime for politician to entice our corps members with money or intimidate them in any way during and after election.
“It is the duty of everybody in and around the state to protect corps members jealously “, Attah said.
Speaking on NYSC 45 years celebration, Attah said the state NYSC and corps members would carry out sensitisation walk, cleaning of motor parks and markets and rendering medical services in the rural communities around the state.
He commended the state government for its good gesture towards corps members in the state.
