Osun 2018: Anxiety, apprehension as Appeal Court delivers judgement Thursday

There is high level of anxiety amongst political gladiators in Osun State, as Appeal Court sitting in Abuja will on Thursday, May 9th , 2019, delivers judgement on the Osun state governorship election matter before it.

Daily Post reports that the incumbent governor, Mr Gboyega Oyetola, who was the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, in the September 22 governorship poll had filed an appeal before the court following March 22 judgement of the election petition tribunal, which sacked him from the office.

The majority judgement of the Tribunal had declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Ademola Adeleke the winner of the poll, while maintaining that the September 27 rerun election was null and void.

Oyetola, in his appeal thereafter prayed the court to upturn the judgement, citing certain legal loopholes.

Meanwhile, the notification for judgement on the appeal was communicated to the parties Wednesday morning by the senior Registrar of the court, making it a 24-hour notice.

Speaking with Daily Post Wednesday afternoon in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Gboyega Oyetola, Mr Adeniyi Adesina expressed optimism ahead of the judgment.

” We are confident that the judgement will favour us based on the merit of our appeal in the face of law.

“We are not apprehensive of anything, no cause for alarm, we are more than confident that the honourable judges will do justice”, Adesina said.

However, DAILY POST gathered that there was profound apprehension in the camps of both parties when the news of tomorrow judgment at the appeal court filtered into town.

A reliable source within the ruling party, which craved anonymity said the news came as a big surprise to its party.

” We are indeed taken by surprise with the news, many of us were not expecting it so fast, it really unsettled many of our leaders.

“All the same, we are confident of victory going by the quality of arguments before the court by our legal team, I see light after the tunnel”.

In another reaction, a chieftain of PDP in the state, Prince Saka Mabro has described APC’s government in the state as ‘ephemeral ‘ adding that its days are numbered.

He opined that the last gubernatorial election in the state was a “political caricature ” which would never hold.

According to him, Osun State, after the election became “a reference point for electoral fraud ” which in his words brought great odium to the state amongst the federating units.

“This party called APC comprises people with no toga of shame, it is indeed a conglomerate of shameless characters without conscience.

“How could they be expecting anything other than legal disgrace, the case is clear, it is a case of broad day robbery, and violent rape of democracy.

” It is victory all the way for my party tomorrow, the PDP will surely carry the day, mark my words, ” Mabro boasted.
