Oshiomhole berates FG over lack of accurate data on unemployed Nigerians

The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has expressed his displeasure over the lack of accurate statistics and data needed to assist the Federal Government in its attempt to fight the ”monstrous demon” of unemployment in the country.

Speaking at the Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja on Wednesday, the Governor stated that the Federal Government can reduce unemployment by reintroducing labour centres in all the local government areas in the country to collect data of unemployed Nigerians.

The former Labour leader maintained that the Ministry of Labour and Employment should be efficiently positioned by President Muhammadu Buhari so as to drive his agenda of providing a better welfare package for the Nigerian workers.

He said, “It will also give opportunity to those who registered to acquire training and also enrol in one form of apprenticeship or the other.

“The centres will also give employers the opportunity to carry out regular trade test, do proper grading of skilled and semi-skilled test among others.

“This is one area we have neglected over the years, and given to the present circumstance, we need to establish these centres.’’

Oshiomole, however, observed that the Federal Government could plan properly if all employers of labour disclose how many vacancies exist, or how many workers they want to sack in their establishment. He noted that it is unacceptable for prisoners from other countries to come to Nigeria in the name of expatriate quotas to do jobs Nigerians can do.
