Oscar Pistorius’s trial has been concluded and the athlete has been sentenced to five years in prison, for the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The South African was given the sentence at Pretoria’s High Court. He was cleared of murder, but convicted for culpable homicide.
Judge Thokozile Masipa independently decided the length of Pistorius’ punishment, as there is no minimum sentence for culpable homicide.
Prosecutors had argued that the paralympian should serve at least 10 years in jail, but his defence counsel pleaded for a community sentence or house arrest.
The 27-year-old shot Steenkamp, 29, three times through a toilet door on Valentine’s Day last year and claimed he fired by mistake, thinking an intruder was in his house.
