Ortom denies stopping pro-Suswam protest in Makurdi

The Benue State government has reacted to the report linking governor Samuel Ortom to the botched protest in Makurdi to demand the release of former Governor Gabriel Suswam, who is being detained by the Department of State Services, DSS.

Report had it that Ortom had ordered the police to stop the protest, citing security reasons.

Reacting, however, Ortom in a statement by his spokesman, Terver Akase, said the report was false and misleading.

He said, “We read a veiled attempt by the National Council of Tiv Youths to link Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, with the botched protest it organised in Makurdi to demand the release of former Governor Gabriel Suswam who is being detained by the Department of State Services, DSS.

“The group failed woefully to tender any evidence to prove the Governor’s involvement in the arrest of his predecessor or stoppage of the planned procession to call for his release.

“If members of the group have any problems with security agencies who have the capacity to act independently, they should sort themselves out without dragging in Governor Ortom who has since denied media reports linking him with the arrest of the former Governor.”
