Organized Labour, Governor Akeredolu disagree over offer on Paris Club refund

The labour unions in Ondo State has rejected the offer made by the Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on payment of outstanding pensions and salaries in the state.

The workers in the state are still being owed salaries from September 2016 to January 2017.

The workers have been expectant since the announcement of the receipt of the State N7.6billion share of the paris club refund.

The labour unions in Ondo state have described as unacceptable the offer made to them by the Governor.

The state government had in a recent meeting with the labour unions said the 75% of the Paris Club refund,which is N5.7billion, would not be enough to offset all the outstanding salary and pensions for September 2016, thereby suggesting a grade level payment.

It was gathered that the Governor turned down the request by the workers for the government to look for other sources to complete the amount needed for the payment of the one month salary.

A top leader who craved anonimity revealed that a balance of N500million is required with the available N5.7billion for the full payment of September 2016 salary and pensions.

However,the organized labour unions under the auspices of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress(TUC) and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) said they would not accept fractional payment of their salaries arrears and pensions.

In a statement signed by Chairman of NLC in the state, Bose Daramola; Sola Ekundayo for TUC and Adeleye Oluwole of JNC after their meeting on Thursday, demanded a full payment of the September 2016 arrears, urging the government to device means of paying the arrears without delay.

” A follow up meeting with the office of the Accountant General where it was opined that the system of payment could not apply the money on grade level by grade level except on percentage basis. The organized labour met today ,Thursday 10th,July 2017 and resolved as follows;

“That percentage payment or fractional payment in whatever form is unacceptable to Ondo state public servants and pensioners.

“That Government should look inward to augment and pay September 2016 salary in full to all workers and pensioners in the state ”

“While assuring Your Excellency of our support and loyalty at all times ,it is our wish that the entire workers of Ondo State will receive their September 2016 salaries and pensions without further delay,” the statement partly read.

The governor had in July through a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye said 75% of the refund, which represents N5.7billion, would be used for payment of outstanding salaries and pensions,while the remaining 35% which is N1.9billion would be devoted to capital projects.
