Opposition parties threaten to boycott Oyo council election

Some opposition parties in Oyo State, under the umbrella of Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), have threatened to boycott the Saturday May 12, local government election.

This is as they described the process leading to the election as “undemocratic and a misnomer”.

The political parties include, African Peoples Alliance (APA), Peoples for Democratic Change (PDC), Progressive People Alliance (PPA) and United Democratic Party (UDP).

CNPP Chairman in the state, who is also the Southwest Chairman of CNPP, Alhaji Yinka Olona explained that the participating political parties under their platform would boycott the exercise.

Olona said that the CNPP had taken the case to court.

He further declared that the four political parties had kicked against the proposed fee to be paid by various political parties aspiring for Chairmanship and Councillorship positions.

He disclosed that OYSIEC fixed N150, 000 for Chairmanship candidates and N100, 000 for Councillorship candidates, which he said “are outrageous.”

In his own remark, CNPP General Secretary, Mr. Folorunsho Angel, described the proposed forthcoming election as “illegal, undemocratic and biased”.

APA Chairman, Mr. Tolulope Adedoyin, while speaking, said they had met with the leadership of the CNPP and were ready to support the cause.

He noted that “organizing free, credible, democratic and fair election is what CNPP under the leadership of Olona is fighting for.”
