The National Coordinator, Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) Otunba Gani Adams, has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption programme.
He said he was confident that if the anti-corruption agencies were strengthened, corruption would be greatly reduced and government would save more money to deliver dividends of democracy to Nigerians.
Adams stated this on Wednesday during a summit organized by Gani Adams Foundation to offer gift items to the less privileged in commemoration of this year’s United Nations World Humanitarian Day.
In his speech entitled: “Improving Living Condition of the Poor, Less Privileged and Physically Challenged During Crises in Nigeria”, the Adams also advised the federal government to implement policies that will better the lives of the common people in the society.
He said the call became necessary due to pressure on the economy, unemployment, youth unrest, natural disasters and rising number of people displaced by the Boko Haram insurgents.
The OPC leader appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to extend helping hands to the less privileged people, saying the need to assist those in need was the reason behind his foundation he set up in 2003.
“If you amass the greatest wealth in the society, you would not be buried with any of them when you die”, he stated.
On the group’s objectives, Adams reiterated that OPC had never been engaged in violent confrontation with government or individuals but had always been in the vanguard of providing security for people and government facilities.
Adams regretted how the federal government in 2003 moved to label OPC as a terrorist organisation.
He recalled that: “It was a trying time for OPC because the then president intended to disband the organisation on the pretext that we are terrorist group, but the contact we had with the UN saved us from the onslaught”.
Adams at the event donated toiletries, food and other items to some orphanages, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigerian Girls Guild and Nigerian Red Cross. In attendance we Professor Ade Alade, Professor Alfred Aggrey-Ffynn, Oba od Shasha Kingdom, Oba Babatunde Akanbi Lawal, Nollywood stars, among others.
