Onnoghen: Appeal Court delivers judgement Friday

The Court of Appeal in Abuja will on Friday deliver judgment in the appeals by former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen challenging the charges of non-declaration of assets against him.

The appeals are – CA/A/44c/2019; CA/A/CA/A/63c/19; CA:A/70c/2019 and CA/A/114c/2019.

At the last sitting, a three-man bench of the court, led by Justice Steven Adah, after taking arguments from parties, said they will be informed when judgments were ready.

Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) is leading the suspended CJN’s legal team while Mr. Aliyu Umar (SAN), leads the Federal Government’s team.

It also removed him as the Chief Justice of Nigeria and chairman, National Judicial Council, NJC, and, confiscated, seized and forfeited all his monies deposited in his Standard Chartered Bank accounts located in Wuse 2, Abuja.

In his judgment, chairman of the tribunal, Danladi Umar, said the monies in the affected five bank accounts were acquired illegally, as Onnoghen “failed” to prove his source of income for the seized monies beyond all reasonable doubts.

Following the recommendation by the NJC to the president for his retirement over the conviction by the CCT, Onnoghen on Thursday, April 4, resigned his office.
