One policeman guides 566 people in Nigeria – Senate

The Nigeria Senate on Tuesday revealed that the nation has been seriously under-policed to the extent that only one Policeman provides security for about 566 people.

Analyzing the situation from the 170 million people that are being protected internally by about 305,579 Policemen and women, Senator Isiaka Adepeko noted that the inadequacy runs short of international best practices of the United Nations global effective policing standard which is a ratio of 222 Police officers to 100 people.

“Distinguished Senators, you are all aware that in line with International best practices of the United Nations global best practices, it is a ratio of 222 Police officers to 100 people,” he maintained.

From various contributions, the Senate commended President Buhari for his prompt approval that 100,000 Police officers be recruited.

“We want to commend President Buhari having approved that 100,00 Police officers be recruited,” Senate said.

The Senate President also urged Police Service Commission to be wary of corruption in the course of the recruitment, noting that the recruitment should be in line with the Federal Character.
