One killed as Plateau College of Education students protest

The Collage of Education Gindiri in Plateau state has been shut down indefinitely, following a violent protest by students of the institution.

The protest is said to have claimed the life of a student and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.

DAILY POST gathered that the students had embarked on a protest demanding for the cancellation of a policy which they claimed was slowing down the process of creating an enabling environment for their learning as well as their welfare.

During the protest, the students on rampage torched several cars and some buildings of the institution before the arrival of security operatives.

In the midst of the commotion, the deceased student, who was alleged to have been hit by a stray bullet, died on the spot.

When contacted, PRO of the institution, Elizabeth Aboreng, said NCE 2 students demanded for their identity cards and that the institution had assured them that it would be given to them.

“Surprisingly today, they started a violent protest during which they burnt down the school clinic and ambulances; so, the school had to be closed”, he said.

Also, when the Plateau State Police Command’s, Public Relations Officer, ASP Mathias Tyopev Terna, confirmed the incident and said he was expecting details from the Divisional Police Officer of Gindiri.
