A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) identified as Afeez has been shot in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, as members of the union and police clashed on Wednesday.
DAILY POST gathered that officers from Dugbe police station in the metropolis barricaded the park, which is popularly known as Lagos park located at Old Garage area of the town as early as 8:30 am to make some arrest.
According to a source at the park who craved anonymity, the police were reacting to a fracas amongst some hoodlums at the park on Tuesday night, which caused disorderliness around the area.
The source added that members of the union resisted arrest by the police, which led to the shooting of one them.
The victim was later rushed to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital by operatives of Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad (FSARS) who were mobilised to the area.
“Over 15 of our members have been since arrested, how could they have barricaded our park claiming to have come to arrest those who are fighting.
“How should friction among some street urchins who are not our members affect our business, that was the reason why we questioned the action, and the only thing they could do was to shoot one of our members”, one of the drivers lamented.
While the park was under the control of the security men, the chairman of the park, Mr. Kazeem also known as Asiri has been whisked away by officers of FSARS for interrogation.
The Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO) for Osun Command, SP Folashade Odoro, when contacted by DAILY POST said the police didn’t clash with members of the NURTW.
“We are law enforcement agency, we don’t fight; I will send what actually happened to you soonest.
Meanwhile, the PPRO is yet to reach out to our reporter as at the time of filing this report.
