An explosion occurred at the Port Harcourt Mall in Rivers State on Wednesday.
One person was reported dead and several others injured.
But the Rivers Police Command spokesman, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said no life was lost.
Omoni said, “The explosion occurred at 5.50 p.m. at the kitchen section with five persons sustaining various degrees of burns.
“They (victims) are currently receiving medical attention at the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital in Port Harcourt,” he said in a statement.
Omoni said the police had launched full investigation with a view to unravelling the cause of the incident.
“However, preliminary investigation conducted revealed that the explosion has no semblance of a terrorist attack.
“Also, no life was lost as being speculated in some quarters. There is no cause for alarm,” he added.
The spokesman disclosed that normal business activities had resumed at the mall.
Meanwhile, the management and owners of the Port Harcourt Mall have commiserated with the injured.
The Mall Manager, Mrs. Chioma Okorie, in a statement said: “We have undertaken an extensive analysis of the situation alongside agencies of government and we can assure our customers that the mall is safe.
“As a safety conscious organization, we had hitherto trained all our security personnel on managing emergencies. Our internal firefighting team were able to curtail the situation within 20 minutes.
“Simultaneously, mall staff evacuated everyone from the mall, and all those injured were taken to the hospital immediately. They are currently recuperating and we wish them swift recovery.
“We want to reiterate that the mall has in place the best safety measures; our safety equipment are top-notch because the well-being of all of our tenants and shoppers is of utmost importance to us,” she added.
