Residents of Onifufu/Aderupagba Compound, in the Oke-Ijeun area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, were Thursday thrown into mourning after a dilapidated mud building collapsed, killing a three-month old pregnant woman, Kafayat Somoye and her daughter.
According to The Punch, Somoye was taking her children, Ganiyat and Ganiyu, to school when the wall of the building which was reportedly weakened by a downpour on Wednesday, collapsed on them as they were passing by.
One of the children, Ganiyu fortunately escaped, but the mother and five-year-old Ganiyat were trapped.
It was learnt that Somoye was initially rescued alive gasping for breath, but later died while being rushed to the General Hospital in Ijaiye.
An eyewitness, Mrs. Kabirat Sonde, who claimed to have escaped being trapped down by the collapsed building as she was also taking her daughter to school through the same route when the incident occurred, said, “I was behind them and a woman was at the front.
“I was also taking my child to school. The woman was the person that raised the alarm immediately the incident happened.
“Somoye was rescued alive but as she was being rushed to the hospital, she gave up the ghost.
“People did not know immediately that there was a girl trapped under the rubble, it was the same woman in my front that alerted everybody to that fact,” Sonde said.
An irate mob was said to have attempted to burn down the remains of the building but policemen from the Oke Itoku and Ibara divisions prevented them, saying the damage had already been done.
The corpses were released to their relatives who showed up when the police were about taking the bodies to the morgue of the general hospital.
