One dead, 11 arrested as NURTW, RTEAN clash in Kwara


One person has been confirmed dead while eleven others got arrested in a clash between members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Offa chapter in Kwara and its counterpart, Road Transport Employer Association of Nigeria, RTEAN on Sunday.

It was gathered that members of the two associations engaged each other in a fight following a disagreement on how to transport some students of the School of Health Technology who had just vacated.

The misunderstanding was said to have ended up in a fight as the warring factions were unable to reach an agreement on model for transporting the students.

The misunderstanding had began on Saturday and was said to have spilled over to Sunday morning, resulting in the death of a driver, identified as Suraju, and the destruction of the RTEAN office and three vehicles.

Confirming the incident, the Area Commander of the Omu-Aran Police Division, Mr Ayodele Olatunji, disclosed that six members of NURTW and five others belonging to RTEAN have been arrested. he added that they would soon be transferred to the state headquarters for further investigations.

Reacting to the incident, the state Police Command’s spokesperson, Mr Ajayi Okasnmi, confirmed the killing, pointing out that details of the fracas is been awaited.
