The Ondo State government has given hope of a quick resolution of the issue leading to the suspension of commercial motorcycle operators in the State Capital, Akure.
Giving update on the ban, which has attracted plea for pardon from the government, the State Commissioner for Information, Hon. Kayode Akinmade said government will be meeting this week to deliberate on the report of the committee set up to look into the issue and come up with recommendations expected to guarantee a proper and regulated operation of the commercial motorcycles.
Akinmade submitted that activities of commercial motorcycle operators will be reviewed, saying every motorcycle plying the state roads must be duly registered to enable easy identification.
He said government was determined to arrest the trend of using motorcycle to kidnap and snatch bags of defenseless citizens without any trace or hope of apprehending culprits in the state.
According to him “there is the need for the okada operators to be properly identified. The state government want them to perfect their papers and be well regulated, that is what government is working to achieve and the cooperation of everyone is needed in this regard.
“Okada operators are part of the society and they deserve to earn their living, but they must do that in accordance with the law of the land”, the Commissioner stressed.
He also urged operators whose motorcycles have been seized to go to the Ministry of Transport to effect their release.
The State Government had suspended the operation of commercial motorcycles popularly called Okada in Akure metropolis as well as their ticketing activities.
The suspension followed a wild protest by the operators over the directive that their motorcycle’s should be properly registered.
In the course of the protest, the operators vandalized public properties.
