The Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, in Ondo state, Kolawole Johnson, has resigned his position.
His letter of resignation addressed to the national chairman reads in part: “It has been a great privilege serving the party for almost two years as the state chairman.
“It is therefore with great gratitude and a sense of strong character, which determines moral purpose and set of things we choose or avoid, that I tender my resignation letter today.
“The lessons, challenges and successes have further prepared me to continue to serve the public in truth and absolute loyalty to the good of the generality of the people, which are the core ethos of the party.”
Indications had emerged at the weekend that the Ondo state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, is plotting to hijack the structure of the party ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.
It was said that Mimiko had already discussed the plan to field his stooge as LP candidate in the November 26 governorship polls with the national body of the party.
A stakeholders’ meeting of the party on Saturday in Akure ended abruptly amidst protest as members insisted that Kolawole must be present to address them on the development.
The fear of the stakeholders was that the state chairman might have caved in to pressure from the governor.
