The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared incumbent governor and flagbearer of Labour Party, winner of the October 20 governorship election in Ondo state.
By this declaration, Dr Olusegun Rahman Mimiko, 57, now has a fresh mandate to govern the state for another four years.
According to the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ondo, Akin Orebiyi, the total number of registered voters in the State is 1,638,950; and the number of accredited voters is 645,597.
A total of 30,415 votes were declared invalid while the valid votes are 594,244 while breakdown of voters in the 18 local government areas shows 49.80 male and 50.20 per cent female.
In the figures declared by INEC’s Chief Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Biyi Daramola of Federal University of Technology, Akure, Mimiko scored a total of 260, 199 votes.
Prof. Daramola, who read the official and final results, also announced that Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate Olusola Alex Oke, 56, polled a total of 155, 961 votes, while Action Congress of Nigeria’s Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, 56, got a total of 143, 512 votes.
Altogether, 13 political parties participated in the widely-monitored elections which was generally peaceful although there were reports of few cases of intimidation and ballot snatching.
