A patent medicine store owner, Ifetayo Olowolayemo who has been alleged to be carrying out unauthorized medical diagnosis and treatment on patients has been nabbed in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Olowolayemo was apprehended by the task force officials of the Ondo State Ministry of Health during a monitoring exercise on patent medicine stores in the state.
The suspect was alleged to have been admitting patients under the guise of operating a patent medicine store called, “Olowolayemo Excel Patent Medicine Store,” in Akure.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro told journalists while parading the suspect that controlled and banned drugs, and injections were found in his possession.
He was also suspected to have been carrying out unauthorized medical activities, such as administering drips, transfusion of blood, injecting unsuspecting patients with banned injections as well as disposal of medical wastes without following proper procedure, among others.
While handing the suspect over to law enforcement agents for further prosecution, Dr. Adegbenro emphasized that the state would not relent but to ensure that residents are safe from quacks and fake drugs dealers who operate under the cloak of patent medicine dealer.
The commissioner, however, advised residents on the need to patronize accredited medical facilities when seeking Medicare as it will keep them away from quacks.
