Ondo Doctor’s death: NMA confirms autopsy result is out

Two months after former Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ondo State Chapter, Dr. David Oguntause was allegedly burnt to death in his hospital in Akure, the State Capital of the union has said its has gotten a preliminary autopsy report on what led to the death of their former leader.

There has been a heated controversy over the cause of Oguntuase’s death, who was the Head of Pediatrics Unit at the Federal Medical Centre,(FMC) Owo.

His burnt body was found at his hospital in Akure last year’s Christmas eve.

Family members have earlier alleged that the deceased was killed and later burnt to give semblance of a fire accident, other people were of the opinion that he died from electric power surge.

Speaking with reporters shortly after a candle light possession and service of songs organized for the deceased by the NMA in Akure on Wednesday evening, the union Chairman, Dr. Bamidele Betiku said they were not too  anxious to disclose their findings on the death to members of the public until after the completion of full investigation.

Betiku noted that the family in conjunction with the NMA decided to go ahead with the burial arrangement since the Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test result has confirmed that the burnt body was that of their former Chairman.

“To us, the DNA was very much important. We wanted to be sure that the burnt body, which was  beyond recognition belong to our past Chairman. That was why we were able to partner with the family for a burial rites for him.Thankfully for the Pathologies and the NMA.

“We have proceeded with the burial. We pray that someone day, the curiosity of the people who asked questions would be satisfied. We believe that investigation is still on going.

” We as NMA are not insinuating that anybody is involved in the death of our late leader but the circumstances that surrounded the death, leave so much to be desire”.

In his tribute, the State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, described Oguntuase as a pillar in the medial association of the state.

Mimiko, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Kola Ademujimi said despite that the deceased never worked under the state government, he contributed a lot towards industrial peace between the NMA and the government.

Also, a former Minister of Education, Dr. Adewumi Abitoye said during Oguntuase’s tenure as NMA chairman, he was able to carry along all members including past leaders of the association.

Abitoye, who was emotionally moved said the deceased was not one to have been lost in the medical profession.

Oguntuase, aged 54, was the President of Alumni Association of University of Benin. He will be committed to mother earth at his hometown, Ikole-Ekiti tomorrow.
