Ohanaeze Ndigbo demands Kanu’s immediate release, faults FG on sale of assets

South-East Governors yesterday boycotted the activities lined up to mark this year’s Igbo Day celebration.

Apart from Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, who was represented by the State’s commissioner for culture and tourism, Mrs. Rita Mbah, other governors stayed away.

In the same vein, none of the National Assembly members, State lawmakers, political and religious leaders from the zone attended the event.

This might not be unconnected with the leadership tussle which had polarized the Ohanaeze Ndigbo for the past two years.

However, at the celebration, Ndigbo gave the federal government a matching order to release the leader of Indigenous people of Biafra(IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally.

They said his continued incarceration may cause more damages in the south-East zone of the country.

The president General of Ohanaeze chief Gary-Enwo Igariwey, whose address was read by the Deputy president General, Sir O.A.U Onyema urged the federal government to obey the order of a high court which earlier granted Kanu bail.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo rose from her last NEC meeting to reiterated her position and appealed that mazi Nnamdi kanu should released unconditionally from detention.

“The issue had earlier been resolved and communicated after our last IMEOBI meeting of 5th November,2016.

“Ohanaeze feels that a critical look at the reasons why the young man was agitation without arms or element of violent will help put thing straight in our county. we urged the federal government to re-evaluate the circumstances which made the court of law to earlier grant him bail and see to which extent it can be useful in putting things straight.

“Mazi Nnamdi kanu’s incarceration til now, does not seems to be palatable and does not seems to be pass a positive message.”

On the proposed sale of national assets, the organisation called on the federal government to reconsider its earlier stand, saying that selling the assets built and developed by previous governments in the country might not be the best way to succeed in an enterprise.

Nigeria’s information minister, Lai Mohammed had declared recently that the Federal Executive Council would have the final say on the proposed sale of assets.

It also expressed dismay over the dilapidated nature of federal roads in the south-East region, noting that virtually all the roads in the area had become impassable.
