The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has commended the Senate for the passage of the South East Development Commission bill.
DAILY POST had on Wednesday reported that the Senate passed the South East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill 2018.
The proposed commission aims at enhancing the infrastructural development of the South East zone, which is grappling with huge ecological challenges.
It is also seeks to act as a catalyst for the development of the commercial potentials of the zone.
Ohanaeze’s deputy national publicity secretary, Mazi Chuks Ibegbu, who spoke in an interview with DAILY POST on Thursday, harped on proper funding of the commission if signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said, “Though, it’s a welcome development, the funding aspect remains worrisome. The federal government has been funding similar agencies in other zones of the country. We wonder why the agency would be funded from the very limited funds that accrue to the South East.
“Ohanaeze is calling for an amendment of the bill so that the federal input to the agency will be properly captured.
“We commend our representatives at the National Assembly for their patriotism and effort in the passage of the bill but urge them not to rest on their oars until the right thing is done.”
