A physically-challenged man, Idris Jimoh, who allegedly terrorized the Matogun area of Ogun State has been arrested by the state Police Command.
Jimoh, a one-legged man who walks with crutches, was arrested alongside his partner in crime, one Kamoru Anisere by police officers from the Agbado division on Tuesday.
Residents alerted the police on the said day after Jimoh was seen with some stolen clothes packed in a polythene bag.
The police, who swiftly responded, were said to have also recovered a single-barrelled gun from twenty-one year-old Jimoh.
Jimoh reportedly led the operatives to his alleged partner, Anisere’s residence in the Agbeyangi area of the community.
According to the police, the duo, during a preliminary investigation, claimed responsibility for some robbery operations in the community.
Speaking with the Punch, Jimoh said the seized gun belonged to his father.
He denied using it for the operation, stressing that he usually struck in the day when residents had gone to work and that he only stole clothes from his victims’ houses.
The physically challenged man said, “Some policemen followed me to search my house and the gun was found. The gun belongs to my father, but I don’t use it to rob. I go into houses to steal when residents have gone to their various places of work. I only steal clothes and little things.
“There is also a woman called Iya Majeed, who sells alcohol in Ijeja. Whenever I stole her drinks, I took them to Sebiri, an okada rider, Stephen and Kamoru (Anisere) and they gave me cannabis in return.
“I also give my mother part of the money I realised from the operations. I steal alone,” Jimoh added.
On his part, Anisere admitted that he knew Jimoh, but denied he was his accomplice.
According to him, Jimoh implicated him because they were friends.
He said, “I live with my father. I am an okada rider. I just woke up in the morning when some local security officials came to pick me to their office. On getting there, they asked if I knew Idris (Jimoh) and I said yes. They said we went for robbery together, which I denied.
“Eventually, the police took us to the station,” he added.
Confirming the arrests, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said: “The suspects were arrested by the anti-robbery patrol. They live in the same area.
“A search conducted on their premises led to the recovery of one locally-made single-barreled gun. The suspects have confessed to being brains behind some robberies.
“They will soon be transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Abeokuta, for discreet investigation,” the PPRO added.
