The Nigerian police’ ban on bangers appears not to be having any effect. Residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital defiled the ban placed on the use of bangers during this yuletide period by police authorities.
A statement signed by the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Adeniran Aremu, the general public, particularly parents and guardians were to check the activities of their children against the practice.
The statement noted that the law guiding the use of fireworks and other explosive is still on and anyone caught flouting the law would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
However, residents have failed to yield to the warning as the use of bangers has become the order of the day.
The police have also failed to carry out their initial threat of arresting those found wanting as youth have continued to use the bangers at will.
Some of the areas where the use of bangers are said to be rampant are Ijoka, Ijomu, Oke-Ijebu, Nepa, Ijo Mimo, Old Garage, Odo-Petu, Osokoti, Oda, Champion Junction, and Orita Obele.
Just like Ondo, residents of the Abuja have also continued to defy police directives on the use of bangers.
Despite the statement by the police that the use of fireworks remain banned in the Nigerian capital, residents continue to use bangers without any hindrance.
Hawkers can also been seen on major roads of the Nigerian capital selling fireworks.
Residents in Ogun state have also ignored the warning, instead there has been an increase use and sales of knock outs.
In areas like Ota, Abeaokuta, Ijoko and Ijebu, children and youths were seen throwing knock-outs without fear.
