Ogonis divided over planned oil exploration

Ogonis have remained sharply divided over the resumption of oil exploration in their land.

This is as foremost Environmental activist, Celestine Akpobari had declared that those advocating for the resumption of exploration activities were enemies of Ogoni who had been paid to sabotage the Ogoni struggle.

Akpobari said it was foolish of individuals and groups drumming support for oil exploration when devastated areas were yet to be cleaned.

He also said nothing in the Ogoni Bill of Rights, which Late Ken Saro-Wiwa amd other Ogoni leaders died for, had been achieved, just as he emphasized that no crude activity will resume in Ogoni until polluted areas were cleaned.

“Those who you hear talking about exploration have taken money. And they are working for their money because you can’t explain why they are agitating when clean up is yet to start.

“It will be foolhardy for any oil company to come to Ogoni without first cleaning up the mess they caused. When they have not accede to the demands of the Ogoni people as enshrined in the Ogoni Bill of Rights.

“There was a struggle. What have we achieved from that struggle. Nothing. Ken will be crying in his grave and I will not allow that to happen.

“I will stir the people and make sure we stop all this nonsense,” Akpobari said.

On his part, President of Ogoni Youth Development Initiative, Saviour Oscar said some indigenous oil companies were fuelling crisis in Ogoni by sponsoring some faceless groups to agitate for exploration in their land.

Oscar said some groups were being used to raise funds and destroy the legacies of late Ogoni hero, Ken Saro-Wiwa.
