The Corp Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, on Wednesday, warned that October 1, remains sacrosanct for the implementation of speed limiters in commercial vehicles.

Recall that the Corps had recently declared October 1 2016 as deadline for drivers of commercial vehicles to install speed limiters, a move targeted at reducing the carnage on the Nigerian roads.

Represented by Assistant Corps Marshall in charge of policy, research and statistics, Dr. Michael Olagunju, Oyeyemi, during a public enlightenment forum in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Oyeyemi, said the enforcement will reduce accidents on the Nigerian road.

Expressing dismay over the statistics of road accidents in the country, Oyeyemi disclosed that in 2015, over 12,077 road crashes were recorded, out of which 5,400 people, representing 68 per cent, lost their lives as a result of over speeding.

According to the FRSC boss, most of the accidents recorded in the past would have been avoided if safety measures were adopted by drivers.

“Most of the road crashes are preventable. If we are able to bring down the speed, we will be saving a lot of lives on our highways,’’ he said.
