Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has presented two brand new buses to teachers in the state.
He presented the buses at a ceremony to mark the 2013 World Teachers Day in Awka.
According to the Governor, one of the buses was for All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools, ANCOPS, while the other one was for Association of Head Teachers of Nigeria.
The Governor also pledged to provide the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, a brand new bus within two weeks.
Governor Obi explained that the vehicles would enhance effective supervision and coordination in schools and noted that teachers as purveyors of knowledge had critical role in building a progressive society.
The National Vice President of the NUT, Comrade Ekisah Godbless commended Governor Obi’s humility and simplicity as well as his remarkable achievements especially in turning around the education sector which he said should be emulated by other governors.
The State Chairman of NUT, Comrade Ifeanyi Ofodile while enumerating the achievements of the Governor on the education sector, noted that no previous administration equaled such feat.
He expressed gratitude to the Governor for appreciating teachers.
In her own remarks, the Chairman State Primary School Service Commission, Lady Joy Ulasi said Governor Peter Obi’s achievements in the education sector were unprecedented, noting that the Governor had reversed the high level of dilapidation and deterioration in schools which he inherited on inception of his administration.
She added that the improvement had led to outstanding performance of students of the state in internal and external examinations.
In his speech, the Chairman, Universal Basic Education Board, Chief Nzemeka Olisa said the Governor had brought a new dawn to the sector by impacting positively on all sectors.
He stated that his enduring legacy of bequeathing quality education to children would continue to benefit posterity and observed that he had set a standard that would continue to challenge future administrations.
