Obi flags off distribution of 500 buses to schools to boost education

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has embarked on what he termed the “final push” towards accelerating the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals in the state.

The Governor, Wednesday, at the Ekwueme Square, flagged off the distributions of 500 buses to all the secondary schools in the State, starting with the initial 120 buses to 120 schools owned by the government and the missionaries.

Obi said that his government had equally procured 2,500 computers with complete school syllabus and books installed in them waiting to be distributed.

He added that all the secondary schools in the State would also get money for provision of sick bays and connection to the internet, as well as generators, among others.

Governor Obi said he was moved to do more as a result of the good fruit his support to the education sector had been yielding.

He thanked the churches for partnering with the State, saying that since government started disbursing money directly to them, they had been able to achieve more than government would have achieved if allowed to spend the money.

In her own remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, Dr. Precious Gbenol, who performed the flag off urged other Governors to emulate Governor Obi’s commitment and judicious management of resources.

She said that schools in Nigeria would soon register its presence in the global map of development if other governors emulated Obi.

Gbenol assured that more funds would be released to the State to complete other on-going projects and initiate more.

In his speech, the National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, said the State had every reason to thank God as Governor Obi had made the State and APGA proud.

He extolled President Jonathan’s effort at moving the nation forward.

Obi had previously disbursed N2 billion for the rehabilitation of Government-owned primary schools- N1.5 billion for rehabilitation of missionary-owned primary schools, N20 million each for rehabilitation of all secondary schools in the State and N1 billion for the strengthening of libraries and laboratories in all the secondary schools in the State.
