Obaship tussle: Tension in Ondo community ahead of Supreme Court judgement

Residents of Akungba-Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government area of Ondo state are under tension ahead of the Supreme Court judgement as regards the rightful occupant to the community’s throne.

The Supreme Court had fixed 16th January for the ruling on injunction, stay of execution of the coronation of Alale of Akungba – Akoko, as well as the hearing on the substantive suit.

Recall that the Court of Appeal Akure, the Ondo State capital, had upheld the judgment of the High Court, which earlier declared Prince Oseni Adu as the Alale-elect of Akungba-Akoko.

The Appeal Court, in a unanimous judgement, led by Justice Mohammadu Danjuma, declared that the selection of Prince Adu as Alale-elect by the kingmaker remained valid.

The case with suit number SC 155/2018 is between Julius Olanipon and Prince Emmanuel Salau, as well Sunday Akeju from Agure-Mokun branch of the Ole ruling house

The stay of execution was filed by Julius Olanipon to restrain Ondo State government from executing the Court of Appeal verdict on the 11th December 2017, which affirmed the High Court judgement on 20th December 2013.

The judgment had declared Prince Oseni Isiaka as the new Alale of Akungba Akoko.

Counsel to the appellant, Barrister Olabanjo Ayenakin claimed that Mr Sunday Ajimoh has already occupied the throne.

Meanwhile counsel to the respondent, Agure/Mokun family branch of Ole ruling house, Mallam Gani Ashiru asked the Supreme Court to strike out the stay of execution and injunction, which he said was a declarative judgement.

He also submitted that the Apex Court, should sack Sunday Ajimoh, who he said was illegally installed as Alale of Akungba Akoko by the former Governor Mimiko’s administration in the state.

It would be recalled that Akungba Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government area of Ondo State, has been in Obaship crisis since the demise of Oba Omoshowon Adekanye in December 2003.
