Obasanjo’s letter to Buhari: Afenifere, Adebanjo react

The pan-Yoruba Socio-political organization, Afenifere, has reacted to the call put across to President Muhammadu Buhari by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to forget his 2019 ambition for the good of the country.

Also reacting in a separate interview with Vanguard is an elder statesman and a leading voice in the South West, Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

Obasanjo had yesterday, in a lengthy and strong-worded letter, asked President Buhari not to re-contest as President.

Afenifere threw its weight behind Obasanjo, saying that it supports the call that the country needs fresh hands in 2019.

Afenifere National Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, who spoke on behalf of the group, said, “That is the right call to make at this time.

“This country cannot continue another four years like this. On all scores, the country is worse off than it was in 2015.

“Look at the killings going on, the conflicts without any authority in the land to arrest the killers or to put an end to it.”

For Adebanjo, Buhari should step down honourable, adding that Obasanjo had given the right advice to the President,

Adebanjo said, “That is the right advice except those who are sycophants. It is only those who love the country and who love him (Buhari) that will tell him the truth.

“It is obvious that he does not have the capacity to run this country. It was out of sheer sentiments and prejudice that people voted for him and I for one was one of those who kicked against voting for him.

“Now that he has seen it, if he is honourable, as Obasanjo has said, let him step down for a better person.”
